Itinerary Details

Day 1 Arrival - Moshi
We arrive at Kilimanjaro airport and are welcomed by our guide and transferred to Moshi for our first night in Tanzania. Our guide briefs us about the program and preliminary questions can be answered.

Day 2: Lake Challa
Today we transfer to the Kidia gate on the slopes of Kilimanjaro at 1500m. Here we assemble our mountain bike and cycle along the slopes to Marangu, the major base for Kilimanjaro climbs. After lunch at the Kilimanjaro Resort we continue our ride downhill to the Lake Challa Safari Lodge (900m) for dinner and overnight. In the late afternoon we can descend on foot the steep crater walls to the lake shore where fishermen display their catch.

Day 3: Chagga land
A 40 km ride uphill along the Kenyan / Tanzanian Border takes us to Maktau Mountain Lodge at 1200m. On the way we stop for a break to unpack our lunchboxes and marvel at the Tsavo plains below us. After arrival in the early afternoon we can opt to visit a Chagga homestead to learn more about the life of this farming community.

Day 4: From the Chagga Land to the Maasai land
Today’s 50 Km ride is a little bit strenuous. We have to climb almost 1000m to Rongai, a forestry area dating back to the German colonial era. Here we stop for lunch and enjoy the views over the Amboseli basin in Kenya below. After a descend for some 300m we reach Kamwanga, a Maasai settlement on the border to Kenya. Today we pitch our tents nearby and use the late afternoon to watch the traders in the village exchange their wares.

Day 5: A Maasai Encounter
After breakfast we are in our saddles again and ride mostly downhill for 70 km to Olpopongi, a cultural village Maasai Village on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. All along we can enjoy magnificent views of the narrow glacier and the western breach of Kilimanjaro and soon Mt. Meru joins the scenery. In the early afternoon we arrive at the Cultural Village and are welcomed by song and dance of the Maasais. The night we spent in the traditional houses of the Village.

Day 6: Through the wheat Farms to Sanya Juu
After a leisurely taken breakfast we cycle a short distance through large scale farms to the small town of Sanya juu. Here we arrive for lunch and can use the afternoon to look at the colour full market or ascend the nearby Oldonyo Murwak, a world heritage site which the Maasai Community uses for age coming ceremonies.

Day 7: Through the Banana Plantations to Machame
Today, we cycle in an altitude between 1200 and 1500m along the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. We cross several ridges and rivers created by the ancient lava flows when Kibo was still an active volcano. The area is very fertile, and the Chagga population in the area does intensive small scale cultivations. We virtually cycle through banana forests intercropped with coffee and vegetables. At several homesteads we find people brewing “ Mbege “ the local banana beer used for celebrations and social functions. Due to several steep climbs and drops along the route the day is a little strenuous but we only need to cover about 35 km. In the early afternoon we arrive at the Aishi Hotel for a well- deserved rest, dinner and overnight in preparation for the ultimate Kilimanjaro Challenge.

Day 8: Horombo (3800m)
We will be picked up at Hotel at 7:30 am and drive through Kilimanjaro’s semi-tropical foothills to Marangu Gate for registration and on to Kilema gate at 2000m. An uphill ride for 19km takes us Horombo Hut in the moorland at 3800m. Our crew has prepared for us a delicious dinner. Here we spent the night in the bunk beds in the hut.

Day 9: Full Day Horombo Acclimatization
Today we have to acclimatize ourselves to protect ourselves from getting altitude sick. After breakfast we start riding through the Alpine desert to the Mawenzi Hut at 4330m. The distance is about 10 km and about 90% is rideable. In the afternoon we return to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 10: Horombo – Kibo Hut
We wake up early wake and make sure our duffel bags are packed and ready to go. After breakfast, we meet your guide and we head back up to Kibo hut. Again the first 3km would require you pushing and carrying your bike a lot, with the final 7km to Kibo hut offering a good biking trail. We will enjoy lunch and then aim to rest. At around 16h00 depending on how you feel it is possible to hike partially up the summit path to orientate yourself for the summit attempt later that night.

Day 11: Uhuru Peak 5895m
The summit (Uhuru Peak) is now a further 1195m up and we will make our final ascent the same night. We prepare your equipment, thermal clothing etc for your summit bid. This should include the replacement of our headlamp and camera batteries and make sure you have a spare set available as well. At 1.00 am, we will be woken up by our guides and start the zigzag trek up a long screen slope. After roughly two hours we reach Hans Meyer’s Cave and from here the gradient gets steeper. We continue our climb for approximately another 3 hours to Gilman’s Point. Here we take our bikes from the porters and start riding to Uhuru peak. After the summit photos we descend again to Horombo hut. The cycle able part is about 14 to 20% between Kibo Hut and Uhuru Peak while 100% from Kibo Hut to Horombo.

Day 12: The ultimate downhill ride
After a leisurely breakfast we embark on the on the world’s ultimate downhill mountain bike rollercoaster ride. Starting at 3800 m we descend to the Kilema gate (2000m, 25km) in less in about 2 hours! It is strongly recommended not to give your porters any tips until you and all your gear have reached the gate safely. Finally we transfer by car to Marangu gate to sign out of the park register and will be awarded our Kilimanjaro Mountain Bike Certificates. Finally, we return to Moshi for celebrations, a well - deserved dinner and overnight.

Day 13: Lake Manyara
After breakfast, we drive with packed lunch to Lake Manyara. This National Park is on the shores of a beautiful lake, tucked below the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Referred to also as ‘Old Hunter’s Paradise’ it is home to the legendary tree climbing lions. On the Lakeshore we find herds of hippos, thousands of flamingos and other water birds. After a lunch break at the hot springs we continue with the game drive before we proceed to Karatu for dinner and overnight stay. Accommodation: Country Lodge

Day 14: Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast, we enjoy a scenic drive to the world's largest volcanic caldera. Immerse yourself in this harmonious environment, home to more than 25,000 large mammals. See the lush grasslands of the crater floor that are fed by the rains and the neighboring woodlands that provide shelter for the area's wildlife. We learn from our guide about how this bountiful habitat contributes to the richly diverse population. Spot one of the local residents, like a lion, elephant, baboon or leopard. Catch a glimpse of the rare black rhino that finds refuge here. Stop for a picnic lunch surrounded by the natural beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and then drive back to Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Day 15: Return to Arusha
Today we return to Arusha, pack our bikes and proceed to Kilimanjaro for departure. Depending on our flight we can opt for lunch and a dayroom near the airport.
