Tanzania Migration Safari

Tour Highlights

The Wildebeest migration has been named as the Seventh Wonder of the World and this couldn’t be any less true. Imagine the view and rhythm of about 1.3 million wildebeests moving in a stream. Add to that over 200 000 zebra, almost 500 000 gazelles and other herds of animals and maybe you’ll have an idea of the thrilling adventure. During the months of January to March, hundreds of thousands of animals migrate from the Maasai Mara to the Serengeti plains and Ngorongoro Area.

Itinerary Details

Day 1 Arusha - Manyara
After breakfast, we drive with packed lunch to Lake Manyara. This National Park is on the shores of a beautiful lake, tucked below the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Referred to also as ‘Old Hunter’s Paradise’ it is home to the legendary tree climbing lions. On the Lakeshore we find herds of hippos, thousands of flamingoes and other water birds. After a lunch break at the hot springs we continue with the game drive before we proceed to Bougainvillea Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Drive to Serengeti
Today we drive to Serengeti with packed lunch. Serengeti is the Maasai name for ‘endless plains’. This wildlife premier destination is renowned for its large lion population among other mammals and 500 bird species. We will do game drives as we proceed to Acacia Serengeti Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Serengeti Game Drives
Today we can opt to spend the entire day on a game drive with packed lunch or have an early morning and evening game drive with lunch at the camp. Both options give us a good opportunity to explore the Park on which Grzimek based his famous documentary on “The Serengeti Shall Not Die”. Our dreams of watching lions hunt wildebeests and gazelles may also become a reality. Dinner and the overnight stay will be at Acacia Serengeti Camp.

Day 4: Drive to Ndutu Area
After breakfast, we drive to Ndutu Area with packed lunch. The area is usually heavily populated with elephants, birds and plains game. We explore a wide range of different habitats that include swamps, woodland, soda lakes and the world famous Serengeti short grass plains. After lunch, we will do a game drive en route to Mbugani Ndutu camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Ndutu Game Drives
After breakfast, we enjoy game drives in the Ndutu area. Over a period of about three weeks in February, several hundred thousand calves are born. Pregnant wildebeest give birth so you may be lucky to see a few days old calves. Unlike other antelope, wildebeest do not hide their newborns and within 3 days they are usually strong enough to keep up with the herd. We can opt for a full day game drive with packed lunch or return to the camp for lunch. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Mbugani Ndutu Camp.

Day 6: Drive to Ngorongoro
After breakfast, we visit the world’s largest intact caldera; The Ngorongoro Crater. Here we come across virtually all game one expects to see in East Africa. Ngorongoro is definitely one of the natural Wonders of the World. With packed lunch in our car, we will have plenty of time to watch the animals and explore the vast, 20km in diameter caldera. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Bougainvillea Lodge.

Day 7: Drive back to Arusha
After breakfast, we drive back to Arusha arriving in the afternoon for our departure flight or to the next destination.

This trip requires a spirit of adventure and enthusiasm for wildlife in the natural environment of Tanzania in relative comfort. The special attraction of this tour is the migration of wildebeests from Maasai Mara across the Mara River into Serengeti. The safari may involve long driving distances. Good overall physical fitness and climatic compatibility is required. Before departure please consult with your doctor or health care professional for advice. Depending on weather conditions and time of year, the road conditions may be very poor (eg. potholes, excessive dust or after rains softened sections). Active and comradely cooperation should be obvious to all participants.
Accommodations are in hotels, lodges, and bush camps. They vary from excellent & comfortable to basic accommodation.
